===============================

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carl Edwards used two straight wins to take the
Sprint Cup points lead for bridge size playing cards first time in his career.
On Wednesday, NASCAR said his Las Vegas victory was tainted and
slammed Edwards and his Roush Fenway Racing team with its toughest
penalty yet. Edwards was docked 100 points — knocking him out of first
place — and stripped of the poker size playing cards bonus points he earned for the win.
Edwards would have carried those bonus points into the Chase for the
Championship, assuming he's one of the 12 drivers to qualify for
NASCAR's 10-race motorcycle insurance to the title.
Bob Osborne, Edwards' crew chief, was fined $100,000 and suspended six
weeks, and custom faces playing cards Roush was docked 100 owner points.
The penalties stem from post-race inspection Sunday when NASCAR found
the cover was off the oil tank in the race-winning No. 99 Ford.
It's believed that by opening up the oil tank trunk, the air is able
to circulate through the car and create as much as 10 percent more
downforce.
Gordon wins appeal
Robby Gordon received a season-saving reprieve from a NASCAR appeals
committee when the panel restored 100 points he had been docked for a
Daytona infraction. The panel also lifted crew chief Frank Kerr's
six-week suspension but raised his monetary fine from $100,000 to
$150,000.
Gordon had an unapproved front bumper, but Dodge inadvertently sent
him a prototype bumper it is hoping to get approved for competition.
Gordon had just switched from Ford to Dodge the week before.
Gordon had plummeted to 37th streetwear fashion the standings. That put him below the
coveted top-35 mark, which guarantees drivers a spot in the field each
week, and had NASCAR's only independent better auto insurance in jeopardy of
missing races. He's now 21st.
